How long should a portrait session take?

A portrait photoshoot can take anything from a few minutes for the sitter to a full day. The photographer will have to work longer to prepare for the shoot and later process the images. The length of the shoot depends on the photography breif and desired outcomes. An example of a very shot photoshoot (for the sitter) would be a corporate headshot session where each employee spends 5-10 minutes with the photographer.
A longer portrait session might be a personal branding shoot where you’ll spend a full day with a photographer taking photos in different settings, having several clothes changes. As you spend a while with the photographer, you’ll have time to relax and get comfortable in front of the camera. This gives the photographer more time to try out different options with you and capture more images.

How many photos will I get for a portrait photoshoot?

Similarly to the above answer, this totally depends on the type of portrait shoot and the time spent together, as well as your agreement with the photographer. Be sure to discuss this in advance. Some photographers will charge per image delivered, while other will give all the photos or a selection of edits.
Generally speaking, more is not always better. You don’t need hundreds of photos and would probably be better off having a smaller selection of images edited by the photographer.

Are portrait photos retouched or post-processed?

Not all portrait photos are retouched. This depends on the shooting style of the photographer. Generally speaking, all photos will have some post process but this could mean simply adjusting the brightness and colour tone of the photos to ensure they look their best.
Some photographers will use tools like Photoshop to touch up images, remove blemishes, clean backgrounds and create other effects. If this is something you’re interested in please discuss this with your photographer in advance as it could take time and cost more.

What can retouching or post production achieve with portrait photos?

Retouching can do anything from very simple enhancements to completely changing a person’s look. Generally speaking, the best portraits are true to life and shouldn’t alter your look too much. A good photographer will make you shine or bring out your character using good lighting and composition.

Do I need a studio for a portrait shoot?

Portrait photography can be taken in the studio or on location. Each has strengths. It is also possible to set up a portable studio setup in a location if it has a bit of space and budget allows. Please discuss your shoot needs with your photographer and they will make recommendations accordingly.

I hate having my photos taken, how can I be more comfortable during a portrait photoshoot?

This is worth discussing with your photographer before your shoot day. Generally speaking, practice makes perfect and if you know you’re going to take some time to warm up, then it might be worth booking a slightly longer session. Rememeber that you don’t really have to do anything special or pose in a speicifc way. There is no right or wrong, just enjoy the experience and chat with your photographer as you go.
